What would I recommend people who want to start a remote career? I think about this a lot…

Looking back to my journey, I’d probably always answer this question with working on your skill set.

And that’s for an important reason:

Having decent skills is your biggest asset when it comes to starting a remote career. It is your skill what you’ll ultimately monetize in order to earn money on your own terms. We’ve already talked about this here.

But what skill is decent?

A decent skill serves two things: it is in high demand and it is highly profitable.

Let’s get right into it: Here are 5 high-income skills you can learn for free!

Copywriting a.k.a. Ghostwriting

Words connect and most importantly words sell. Many business owners simply don’t have the time to write content for their audience but know how important it is for customer acquisition.

This is where you come into play:

As a copywriter you handle tasks like writing emails, tweets, website content and much more. Great if you already enjoy writing and bringing your thoughts to paper.

• Learn: I found this on YouTube: a free 8 hour copywriting course.

• Practice: Rewrite ads you see online, or offer to help friends with their websites.

Side note: Copywriting is not only about the pure act of writing. It also has a lot to do with psychology. You learn how people tick to turn them into customers. Exciting skill, if you ask me.

Graphic Designer

Creating visually appealing graphics for products or services is another high-income skill. Here’s how you can learn this skill:

• Learn: Canva is your best bet here. Check out this free Canva Masterclass.

• Practice: Start by creating social media graphics or logos for mock businesses.

Digital Marketer

In order to get some eyes on your business, there is barely a single way around the internet. Brands know this, but many aren’t successful in converting new people to customers.

They need a digital marketer who takes control of this, and that’s your role.

• Learn: Also YouTube, here’s a great free course on Facebook ads 

• Practice: Offer to help a small business with their social media or run a basic ad campaign for your own project to see what works.

Video Editor

Video is king right now, and creators on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube are always looking for editors. This is your chance!

• Learn: Check out this in-depth CapCut Editing Course

• Practice: Edit simple videos for friends or create content for yourself.

Remember: You don’t need fancy equipment—free tools like CapCut are great for you if you’re a beginner.

Web Developer

For people with zero experience in this field, this might be the toughest one to learn.

But: This is the very reason for its high-demand. Many people (including me…) don’t have a single clue how to develop websites or Apps.

So if you want to challenge yourself, here you go:
